The Milestone Categories[edit]

The Chronology project team developed a working list of types of milestones in Vancouver’s planning and development history to aid in organizing what could turn into a an extensive list of milestones:

  • Urban planning - Major plans and policies
  • Built form - Significant buildings and structures (architecture)
  • Land use - Geography and land use changes since before aboriginal settlement
  • Development - Real estate development
  • Politics and governance - Political changes that affected planning and development
  • Transportation - Transportation plans and infrastructure
  • Infrastructure - Utilities, public services
  • Institutions - Community centres, universities, schools, hospitals, museums
  • Demographics - Immigration waves, shifts in population characteristics, population
  • Economy - Development of the city’s economy (tax base, employment rates)
  • Events - Transformative events (Expo, Granville Island, Olympics)
  • Region - LMRPB, GVRD, LRSP, RGS, TransLink
  • Senior Governments – Provincial and Federal legislation, decisions and programs
  • People - Individuals with a significant role in shaping the city and its narrative (planners, writers)
  • Vancouver City Planning Commission – History, role and influence

This list is expected to evolve as the historical material accumulates.
