Description[edit]

“888 Beach is a 3 building complex of luxury condos and townhomes, situated on English Bay” (888 Beach Vancouver). The building is characterized by a thin condominium tower placed upon a ‘podium’ of townhouses located on and oriented towards the street. Private courtyards enclose the townhouses and mediate the public-private boundary.

Significance[edit]

888 Beach, designed by James KM Cheng Architects, becomes a popular architectural archetype called the Podium Tower (otherwise known as the Point Tower, Tower and Podium and Townhouse Podium). The Podium Tower comes to define a Vancouver based architectural and planning style associated with ‘Vancouverism’.
